Use Sanibel’s City instructions for furniture, appliances and vegetation

Sanibel publishes its own collection instructions. A household furniture change may fit that existing service, especially if you can safely move an accepted piece to the proper collection position. Start with the City’s rules rather than a mainland county schedule.

A sofa and a refrigerator follow different collection steps

Under Sanibel’s household-garbage guidance, bulky furniture such as sofas, chairs and mattresses goes with garbage collection. Large appliances require a separate pickup scheduled with WM. The City says refrigerator and freezer doors should remain attached, and appliance placement must leave clearance for the collection truck. Confirm your building’s arrangements before using a condo’s shared collection area.

Keep vegetation out of the furniture pile

The City has a separate vegetation preparation guide. It distinguishes plant material from fencing and other manufactured wood, with its own size and weekly collection limits. Sort a yard cleanup before setting it out: an old patio chair, broken fence panel and palm fronds are not one type of waste.

Plan the route down from elevated living space

At an elevated home, the landing and turn can be harder than the straight stair flight. Trace the route from the room to the ground-level loading place. A heavy sleeper sofa or a large refrigerator needs more detail than the floor number alone; include the tightest opening, rail clearance and any furniture blocking the approach.

Coordinate the condo elevator before island travel

At a condo, obtain the actual elevator and vendor requirements. A building’s resident access is not automatically commercial-crew access. If your building or property manager requires a certificate of insurance, tell us when you book and we’ll arrange it. The elevator reservation, loading position and permitted work window need to cover the same visit. Condo cleanout planning explains what to ask management.

A causeway trip cannot resolve a missing key or an unreserved elevator. Confirm current road access and a working entry arrangement before the crew travels. Use the property’s actual available window, with time for the carry-out, rather than scheduling from an online drive-time estimate.

Include ground-level storage and the lanai

Name those areas in the room list instead of leaving them as additions discovered at loading. Mattress removal and appliance removal explain item preparation. For damaged contents, describe their current condition and keep any utility disconnection with the appropriate trade.

Make a seasonal-owner handoff specific enough to work without you there

A manager can arrange entry while you decide which belongings leave. Mark the pieces that stay in each room, name the person who can answer questions during the visit and agree on lock-up. Completion photos document the cleared areas. That is especially useful when a furniture delivery or your next stay follows the removal.

For a few accepted pieces already accessible for collection, the City option may be all you need. Full-service removal helps when the work includes stairs, storage rooms or sorting the removal list around furnishings that stay. Our seasonal-home guide covers the remote instructions.

After severe weather, ordinary furniture removal still requires safe access to the contents. Standing water, unsafe structures and contamination need the appropriate recovery or remediation work first. The storm-debris guide separates prepared contents pickup from that work. An old storm notice is not evidence of a current public collection program. For a property beyond Sanibel, use the separate Captiva guide; the City’s collection rules do not automatically carry across the boundary.
