How Sanibel’s service works
The City contracts household collection with WM and bills it through the property-tax assessment. Garbage goes out once a week in your own container of 40 gallons or less, or in bags, 50 pounds maximum, the night before or by 6:30 a.m. The City’s zone map shows your day.

Bulky items and appliances
Sofas, chairs and mattresses go out with regular garbage. Large appliances need a scheduled bulk pickup with WM, and refrigerator and freezer doors must remain attached (the opposite of the rule some other areas use). Put appliances away from mailboxes, trees and power lines, because the truck uses a claw. Electronics, tires and small appliances can go out on garbage day.

Repair debris
For small jobs that didn’t need a permit, WM collects up to 2 cubic yards of construction debris per pickup per home. Anything from a permitted project, or more than 2 cubic yards, needs WM, a private hauler or a roll-off.

Vegetation
Within 6 feet of the curb by 6:30 a.m., pieces no longer than 4 feet and no thicker than 4 inches, each under 50 pounds (palm fronds are exempt from the length rule), and no more than 10 bags, cans or bundles a week. Anything over that, or land-clearing material, costs $29.96 per cubic yard through WM. Fencing and landscape borders go with garbage, and nothing goes on empty lots.

Chemicals
Sanibel holds household chemical collection days quarterly at the Sanibel Library; the next are December 2, 2026, and March 3, June 2 and September 1, 2027. Dried latex paint can go in the garbage.

When a private haul makes sense on Sanibel
The weekly limits and the claw truck work for routine loads. Island homeowners usually call for help with what doesn’t fit: a permitted remodel’s debris (construction debris removal), a whole seasonal home or estate being cleared, or yard work well beyond 10 bundles (yard debris removal). We plan island jobs around the causeway and your community’s rules.
