We remove unwanted foam or fiber mattress toppers without taking the mattress underneath. Identify the separate pad, any cover and the mattress itself so only the pieces you are replacing leave.
Keep the topper whole when separating it from the bed
Remove bedding you want to keep, then leave the topper in a form that can be handled without tearing it apart. Cutting foam is unnecessary preparation and can turn one piece into loose fragments.
An intact topper
Fold or roll it only as its condition allows; there is no need to force a brittle pad into a smaller package. Keep any cover that is leaving with it separate from retained bed linen.
Crumbling or affected foam
Contain loose material rather than scattering it through the room. Disclose moisture, odors or pests before pickup so the handling can be planned. Do not mix an affected topper with clean bedding intended for reuse.
Replacing the topper or clearing the entire bed?
A topper-only pickup leaves the bed setup intact. If the main memory-foam mattress is also leaving, identify it as a separate item rather than calling both pieces a pad. Linens and bedding can be included when they are ready to go.
For reuse, start with a specific recipient who accepts that material and condition. A clean-looking cover does not establish the condition of the foam inside, and a bulky worn pad should not be added to an otherwise usable linen donation.
Size and condition matter more than the word “topper”
A thin twin pad and a thick king-size topper occupy different amounts of space. The size, thickness, number of pads, loose material and any additional mattress or furniture affect the load. Upstairs bedrooms and long carries from storage add handling even when the topper itself is light.
Curbside rules for mattress topper differ across Lee County
- Fort Myers: weekly bulk pickup up to 4 cubic yards, often on a different day from trash.
- Cape Coral: same day as trash, within 3 feet of the road, nothing over 150 pounds.
- Fort Myers Beach: free WM special pickup; not at the curb more than 24 hours early.
- Sanibel: sofas, chairs and mattresses go out with regular garbage.
- Unincorporated Lee County: picked up as needed; set out like garbage, within 6 feet of the road.
