We remove crib mattresses on their own or with other nursery contents. The crib can stay in place if you are replacing only the mattress; identify bedding and other items separately so nothing intended for the new setup leaves by mistake.
Separate the mattress from the nursery pieces you are keeping
Remove sheets, covers and loose bedding that you want to keep. A changing pad, travel-crib pad and crib mattress are different items, so identify each one that is leaving rather than referring to everything as “the baby mattress.”
When the crib is staying
Leave retained hardware and crib parts out of the pickup group. There is no reason to dismantle the frame for a mattress-only removal.
When the whole crib is leaving
Include crib removal in the request so ordinary frame disassembly and carry-out can be planned. Other baby gear can go in the same load if it is ready to leave.
Storage condition matters more than a clean cover
A mattress stored in a garage can have moisture, odors or pest issues that are not apparent through a cover. Explain those conditions before pickup and keep affected material contained rather than mixing it with clean nursery items.
Decide about reuse separately from removal. A recipient needs to evaluate the mattress’s condition and fit for the intended crib. Ask specifically about crib mattresses before making a donation trip. Acceptance of baby clothing or nursery furniture does not establish acceptance of the mattress.
A mattress-only pickup and a nursery clearout are different loads
The mattress count, stairs and carry distance affect the job. Adding a crib, changing table or dresser changes both volume and handling, especially if furniture has to come apart. List those larger pieces together rather than counting them as accessories to the mattress.
Curbside rules for crib mattress differ across Lee County
- Fort Myers: weekly bulk pickup up to 4 cubic yards, often on a different day from trash.
- Cape Coral: same day as trash, within 3 feet of the road, nothing over 150 pounds.
- Fort Myers Beach: free WM special pickup; not at the curb more than 24 hours early.
- Sanibel: sofas, chairs and mattresses go out with regular garbage.
- Unincorporated Lee County: picked up as needed; set out like garbage, within 6 feet of the road.
