Thursday, and not a day early

The Town’s collection day is Thursday. Trash goes within 6 feet of the curb by 6:30 a.m., in a can of 40 gallons or less, and putting anything out more than 24 hours before or after pickup breaks Town code. That includes bulky items, which matters on an island where a sofa left out for days is a code issue. Extra or Saturday pickups are available from WM at an additional charge.

Fencing and yard waste

Wood fencing can go at the curb with regular garbage, up to 2 yards a week, stacked neatly. Chain-link fencing needs a special pickup from the hauler, with the concrete removed from the bottom of the posts. Up to 50 pounds of palm fronds can go out unbundled. Questions go to the Town’s Public Works department, 239-765-0202.

Rentals and vacation homes

The Town makes rental owners and property managers responsible for making sure tenants follow the collection rules, which is why turnovers and post-season clean-outs are usually planned around Thursday or handled privately.

When a private haul makes sense on the beach

Timing is the usual reason: a vacation rental turnover that can’t wait for Thursday, a condo with stairs or an elevator (condo cleanout), a seasonal home being closed up, or a load bigger than a special pickup. After a storm, see our storm debris guide; a 2023 Town notice said Estero Boulevard from the Matanzas Pass Bridge south was Lee County’s responsibility for storm debris.
