A filing cabinet may be unwanted furniture while its contents remain confidential business records. Those are separate decisions. Fort Myers Junk Removal takes empty, unlocked filing cabinets; confidential documents go to a shredding service before pickup.
Start by identifying vertical or lateral cabinets, their locations and any fire-rated construction. A cabinet’s exterior size is not a reliable measure of its weight. Show the complete route out as well as the furniture.
Planning your filing cabinet removal
Empty storage furniture; fire-rated construction and banks of cabinets need review.
- Before pickup
- Empty and unlock every cabinet; secure records, keys and personal material.
- Arrange any required records destruction separately before pickup.
- Where it is and how to reach it
- Room and floor, stairs, elevator and loading arrangements.
- Cabinets attached to each other, walls or a work surface.
- Useful photos
- Whole cabinet, dimensions and any safely accessible model label.
- Visible attachments, surrounding workspace and exit route.
- What affects the quote
- Cabinet count, construction and documented weight if known.
- Attachments, stair carrying and loading restrictions.
Remove confidential records before the cabinets go.
Have the business’s responsible person remove client files, employee information, checks, keys and other sensitive material. Check every drawer and compartment. Do not leave papers inside with a verbal instruction to “throw those away too.”
Keep confidential documents out of the load; a shredding or records-destruction service handles those. If records must be destroyed, arrange that separately and complete it before the cabinet pickup. A locked cabinet is not a secure substitute for emptying it.
Width, depth and fire-resistant construction change the carry.
Lateral cabinets are wide across the drawer front; vertical cabinets are narrower but deep. Their shape affects turning through a doorway even when both have the same drawer count. Fire-resistant construction can add substantial weight, so a make or model is more useful than judging by the exterior alone.
Identify linked cabinets, shared countertops and wall anchors. The crew can plan which furniture connections to release and which units remain. Wall patching and rebuilding retained furniture are separate work.
Leave drawer interlocks and release mechanisms intact.
After emptying every drawer, leave the cabinet unlocked and stable. Some cabinets permit only one drawer to open at a time; do not bypass that interlock or pull drawers out to lighten the furniture. Open drawers can shift its balance.
Number of cabinets, fire-resistant weight, joined sections and stairs affect the quote. A bank of lateral files beneath a shared top needs more separation and carrying than one ordinary empty vertical file. Leave the furniture in place for the crew rather than moving it outdoors yourself.
Give us the cabinet list and building instructions.
List the cabinets by room and mark those that remain. Provide the freight-elevator reservation, loading-dock instructions, permitted vendor hours and any security check-in requirements. A count is only useful if the crew can reach the actual cabinets during the agreed window.
For a larger changeover, combine the cabinet list with the office-furniture guide. Printers or copiers have a separate data responsibility covered in equipment pickup; they are not records disposal by another route.
