Fuel and battery preparation
Gasoline must be removed before pickup; do not include fuel cans or drained fuel in the load. Electric and battery-powered mowers need battery type and condition reviewed separately. Tell us about stuck wheels, damaged handles or leaks so handling can be planned. Riding equipment needs its own loading assessment.
Keep the blade enclosed and describe the deck
A narrow electric mower, a steel-deck self-propelled mower and a small reel mower have different weights and moving parts. Leave blades inside their guards or housings; removal does not require an operating demonstration. An already-detached bagger or side-discharge chute can leave with the mower. Folding a sound handle may shorten the footprint, but forcing a corroded joint can create sharp loose parts.
The mower’s condition and carry affect pickup
A mower that rolls from a garage is easier to handle than one with seized wheels behind a raised shed threshold. Extra decks, baggers and several machines add load and handling. For a working mower, the reuse options below may be worth checking first; riding mowers and lawn tractors need a separate trailer-loading plan.

If you’d rather handle some of it yourself, or it’s still worth giving away, these are the local options. Each organization decides what it accepts, so check with them before you load the car.
- Lee County lists small-engine equipment such as lawn mowers, pressure washers and weed eaters among the items that can go out with regular household garbage. Source: Lee County Solid Waste: household chemical waste
- Habitat’s ReStore accepts lawn mowers, grills, fountains and gently used tools, but not propane tanks, fuel or gas cans. Goodwill Southwest Florida doesn’t take lawn mowers. Sources: Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties: accepted donations; Goodwill Southwest Florida: donation guide
